Since then World Hello Day has been observed by people in 180 countries. People around the world use the occasion of World Hello Day as an opportunity to express their concern for world peace. World Hello Day becomes more meaningful when it is remembered that the word “hello” in the languages of Egypt and Israel (Arabic and Hebrew) both mean peace: salaam and shalom.
Today is World Television Day. Proclaimed in 1996 by the UN, this day invites UN member states to encourage global exchange of television programs focusing on issues of peace, security, economic and social development and the enhancement of cultural exchange. Nov. 21 was chosen because the first World Television Forum, in which media figures came together to discuss the increased significance of television in the world, was held on this day in 1996.
Today is Armed Forces Day in Bangladesh. The date is set on Nov. 21 to commemorate the 1971 offensive of the combined forces of Bangladesh’s army, navy and air force against the army of Pakistan. The ensuing war continued until Dec. 16, 1971, when both the Liberation War of Bangladesh and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 ended simultaneously.
Today is the anniversary of the birth of Jean François Marie Voltaire (1694-1778). Voltaire was a writer, essayist, deist and philosopher of the French Enlightenment. He was known for his wit, philosophical sport and defense of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and the right to a fair trial. Best known for his novel “Candide,” Voltaire is credited with the statement, “I disapprove of what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”
On this day in 1905, Albert Einstein published his paper “Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon its Energy Content?” in the journal Annalen der Physik. This paper revealed the relationship between energy and mass and led to the famous mass-energy equivalence formula, E = mc².
